Workforce Development & Training

GP’s workforce and training support services focus on improving the skills of your most important asset—your people. Since training is one of our company’s core competencies, you can count on world-class solutions, developed around best practices and proven processes.

Benefit from comprehensive programs, all from a single provider.

When you work with GP, you’ll have the consistency, convenience, and accountability of addressing all your workforce development needs through a single, world-class source. Each of our solutions is tailored to your culture, equipment, processes, and objectives, including:

Training needs analysis (TNA)

A training needs analysis identifies the current level of your employee’s knowledge and skills and compares them to your company’s needs and expectations, as well as those from other best-in-class power companies. The training needs analysis also analyzes your training resources (staffing and materials) as well as your facilities used for training. This process uncovers gaps and allows GP to prepare a training plan to align your needs with your expectations. Your TNA will identify:

  • How to achieve best-in-class results
  • Priorities for training program improvements
  • How to sequence training interventions
  • ROI calculations that address your business goals

Job-task analysis (JTA)

This analysis is a complete and thorough review of jobs and tasks performed by all job classifications at your plant. During this analysis, GP will gather data and provide your company with a report outlining each job position and all the tasks and skills associated with that job. This information can then be used to determine training program content as well as define job duties. By conducting a JTA we can determine:

  • The difficulty, importance, and frequency of job tasks
  • The duties and tasks that lead to successful performance of a job
  • The elements that characterize a task
  • The tools or resources needed to assist the individual performing each task

Qualification programs

We work with you to develop a blended learning (i.e. using many delivery modes) solution for each job classification within your plant. An implementation plan for structured on-the-job (OJT) is also incorporated into the program. Our qualification program typically encompasses several different aspects including:

  • Job performance measures (qualification check off sheets and cards)—A uniform standard to evaluate the skills of personnel. Each step is explained and expected responses are included.
  • Qualification exams to test the knowledge and skills of personnel.

Just-in-time outage training (J-I-TOT)

Experienced GP training specialists can come to your site and work with contractors and engineers to gather information on new equipment that is being installed during a unit outage. They then conduct operator classroom training sessions and equipment walkdowns and work with management to complete the training with minimal impact on operator schedules. GP’s J-I-T OT allows operators to perform their critical outage work while GP chases the information needed for training operators on the new equipment.

GP’s just-in-time outage training ensures your operators know the location and purpose of the new equipment and how to operate it—prior to unit start-up, when costly mistakes typically happen. After the unit comes back on line and the new equipment is fully debugged and commissioned, GP will fill in any missing information, such as final setpoints and alarm responses, to ensure the final training materials are accurate and complete.

Instructor-led training classes

Make sure your employees have the skills and knowledge needed to operate and maintain a safe and efficient plant. GP’s staff of highly experienced instructors helps your power plant personnel learn how to maximize the availability, capacity, and efficiency of your equipment and facilities. All of our power plant courses can be presented at your site and customized to suit your needs and equipment. Additionally, many of our courses are available on an open enrollment basis at locations across the US.

Structured on-the-job training (OJT)

Structured on-the-job training (OJT) guides are developed to address critical tasks or operating sequences needed to successfully learn certain jobs. These guides are integral to your site-specific system descriptions (SDs), operating procedures (OPs), and/or maintenance procedures. All OJT tasks are analyzed to determine the best method of learning a particular knowledge or skill.

Power plant curricula

Power plant curricula can be developed for all your specific job disciplines. GP has designed curricula for control room operators, mechanics, chemists, technicians, and numerous other classifications of plant personnel. We recommend a blended learning solution which includes instructor-led training classes, structured OJT, oral boards, job performance measures, comprehensive exams, online training classes, and other methodologies.

Hiring and screening

The success of any organization is highly dependent upon the knowledge, skills, and abilities of the workforce. Unfortunately, it has become increasingly difficult to attract and retain the very best workers within the power industry.

GP offers several services that enable our customers to make the critical link between people and top-quality job performance. Our process begins with an effective screening and hiring service that ensures only highly qualified candidates are considered for employment. Our goal is to help you reduce hiring costs and minimize employee turnover.

Aging workforce solutions

Over 50% of the people who hold the “tribal knowledge” of your facility will be leaving in the not too distant future. Furthermore, the availability of a trainable labor pool to replace Baby Boomers is in short supply and difficult to recruit.

It is increasingly difficult for new workers to acquire the skills needed to run a complex power generating facility. This means that new methods such as online technologies—in addition to conventional training methods—are needed to develop high-performing employees. GP can help your plant capture existing knowledge through innovative processes and procedures.
